VISA OR RESIDENCE

From your country
or from Spain.

There are two paths depending on where you are when you apply.

  • From abroad: an international remote work visa for up to one year.
  • From Spain, if you are legally present: a residence permit directly.
  • Residence lasts up to 3 years and renews for 2-year periods.
  • With a valid visa you can apply for residence in the 60 days before it expires.
  • A relationship with the employer or clients of at least 3 months.

TAXES

Your visa also
comes with taxes.

Settling in Spain can make you tax resident. The good news: the Beckham Law fits remote work.

  • With the remote work visa, the reason for the move is met for the Beckham Law if you are employed.
  • The other requirements still apply, such as 5 years of non-residence.
  • 6 months from Social Security registration to opt in.
  • Social security: Spanish contributions, an agreement or a certificate depending on the country.
  • Tax residence: more than 183 days or centre of interests in Spain.

What the international remote work visa is

It is the Law 14/2013 route for non-EU nationals working remotely, exclusively by digital means, for companies based outside Spain. It is known as the digital nomad visa.

If you are employed, you can only work for foreign companies. As a freelancer, you can also work for Spanish companies provided they do not exceed 20% of your activity.

What you must prove

That the company has been genuinely active for at least a year, that the work can be done remotely and an employment or professional relationship of at least three months. You also need a degree or three years of experience, plus the general requirements: being an adult, no criminal record, health insurance and sufficient funds.

We prepare home-country documents early, because translations and apostilles are what delay applications most.

Your family can come with you

Your spouse or partner, minor children or dependent adult children, and dependent parents can apply at the same time as you or later, meeting the same general requirements.

If the applications are filed together, they are decided together.

The Beckham Law for digital nomads

Since 2023, employed remote work gives access to the Beckham Law, and the international remote work visa proves the reason for the move. If you meet the other requirements, you could pay 24% on your salary up to €600,000.

You must opt in within six months of registering with Social Security, so it is best planned alongside the visa.
